Just how big is Slash's guitar? A study.

I decided to do a comparison of Les Pauls after I notice that Slash's gitbox was definitely a bit larger than the one Mick Mars was holding. The unkown factors here are whether or not these muscians are in scale with each other. So I dragged out my other Les Paul bearing figs to see how they all play out.

Shown here are all the Les Pauls in my inventory, including the Kiss Touring edition mistakenly packaged with Paul.


Now assuming all the figs are in scale with each other (and I tried to photograph them on the same plane) we can see the Kiss Touring LP is a behemoth! Ridiculously out of scale with everybody.


Again, assuming the figs are in scale with each other, Slash's guitar is slightly bigger than Mars or (Alive) Ace's LPs. In fact, after closer inspection, Ace's guitar looks a bit too big for him. (Creature Ace's LP seems to be in proper scale with himself)


However...if you look closely at the hands, Slash's right hand seems slightly bigger than Mick's and Ace's. Is Slash sculpted slightly larger or are the other two whimps?

I didn't want to detach the guitars so here's the best side by side comparison I could do. Note how short Mick's LP neck is to Slash's. Of course, we're assuming Mick's guitar is in proper scale with himself.

Mick Mars's guitar is the only Les Paul that's properly scaled.

The Les Paul has a slightly shorter scale length from the nut to the bridge than a Fender Stratocaster.

Combine this with the Fender having a longer headstock (6 tuners in a row as opposed to three on a side) and the Strat should be longer than the Les Paul.

I should just be New Jersy's official guitar reference.... I've been posting a monthly column on a guitar site I hang at called "Guitar of the Month" where each month I post pictures, history, and trivia about different models of guitars.

This month, I wrote about the 1951 Fender Telecaster.... originally released in 1950 as the 'Esquire', but without a truss rod the necks warped so only 50 or so were made. They were re-engineered and released as the 'Broadcaster' but because of the Broadcaster line of drums by Gretsche, the guitar was renamed the "Telecaster". [img]smile.gif[/img]

Actually a side by side comparison of a real Les Paul and real Fender Strat shows that they're almost IDENTICAL in size.

Because of the bridge location in relation to the body, the current Les is about 1/4" longer, but the pre CBS Fender with the larger headstock would be about 1/4" longer.

The Jimi Hendrix strat is almost perfectly scaled... I'd like to see it string-to-string with the Mick Marks Paul and the Slash Paul. [img]smile.gif[/img]

Also, the tuners on the Mick Mars model are perfect, while the ones on the slash model are nearly as wide as the headstock is tall.... they look like Bass tuners. [img]wink.gif[/img]
